plotting a comeback through midwestern states
laughing with friends over beers in the sun
start to feel grounded, want to hug everyone
hike all day alone; give in to mosquitoes
suckling your fingers like frozen taquitos
walk out on the lake but you slip up on the rocks
deep cuts on your heel—blood seeps through your socks
pull over to the shoulder when a bird hits the dash
cry for a little while—then rid the car of trash

signs for no vacancy flicker into space
pull in to the plaza to rest up your eyes
think up all the ways that everything must die
sudden or slow—possibilities endless
surrender your fears until you’re defenseless
the stench of rock bottom in rawlings, wyoming
an arbys parking lot lost under the gloaming
food poisoning i know is fleeting at best
but indiana almost killed me at that pizza hut express

roads don’t give answers; your tires will deflate
when you least expect them to in the dead of the night
it rains all the time now, can’t stop staring at the light
pitch black in missoula, should’ve woke up at dawn
see the sun, climb the mountains sleepless & withdrawn
you can’t be one with nature—it’s all just a blur
a photo for tourists, women covered in fur
animals set free too scared to leave their cages
i've been burning through candles counting empty pages

long lonesome highway—i can't stay awake
count down the hours til i run out of gas
sing to the ether; let the spirits unmask
redemption is petty; it’s never enough
adventure is reckless; i bought fingerless gloves
at an old gas station in the middle of nowhere
where the fuck i am going? well now nobody knows where
i wouldn’t put it past me to stay east through the winter
or get back in my car, drive til my knuckles break and splinter
